Benazir Bhutto assassinated

A suicide bomber killed former prime minister and opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, among others, showing the instability that plagues Pakistani politics. Though Ms. Bhutto oversaw a corrupt government herself in the late 80s and early 90s, she and Nawaz Sharif were seen as potential partners in a power-sharing deal with the inept and unpopular former General and current President Pervez Musharraf. Though it’s not clear that her return to power would have drastically improved the situation in Pakistan, she did have support locally as well as abroad. And of course, it’s a shame that women in Islamic politics are becoming scarcer.
